Photo Renamer

Photo Renamer - Rename photo files and verify backed up photos

When working with pictures from digital cameras you often get file names like "Picture_xxx" etc. Later when you decide to sort the pictures from different camera uploads you will occasionally stumble into the problem where two different pictures have the same name. Sooner or later a photo will be overwritten by mistake. Perhaps wou would also like a better, more informative, file name displayed in the title of "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" when showing pictures for the family. If you agree with me on any of the above statements then keep reading.

Photo Renamer can be used to:

    1. Rename each photo file in a directory to a name which indicates the date and time when picture was taken. You may also set a prefix to be added in front of every name (i.e. "Holiday_" as in the example below).
    2. Verify that each photo file in a backup directory (a CD for instance) is also present in a source directory (for example the "My Pictures"-directory) even if the files have been renamed after the backup was made!

Bonus feature!

When you get developed paper copies from digital photos from a firm, you will often see the file name printed on the back. Great! Now you can see which day and what time you took the shot when browsing through old photos.

Image 1: After clicking "Open directory" and then selecting a directory to scan you get a list of suggested new names. (Note! Some files have the same suggested names but this is not a problem when doing the actual renaming. If necessary, the program will append a counter at the end of the file name, i.e. "20070202_1500.jpg" and "20070202_1500_2.jpg").

Image 2: The program tries to find a matching file in source directory for each file in backup directory. It will not look at the file name to find a match. It will match by looking at: file size, checksum, byte by byte comparison (in that order).
